Shirlington, Washington DC: Shirlington murder-suicide victims identified

Arlington County Police have ruled the July 24 death of two people in a Shirlington apartment was a murder-suicide.

The victim, 30-year-old Xiomara Aracely Benitez, was pronounced dead at the scene on the 4500 block of South 31st Street, as was Juan Carlos Mox, 30, who police believe was the aggressor. They were married and had two children.

The cause of death has not yet been determined. Police are waiting release of the report from the Medical Examiner's Office.

Officers were called to the home at about 2:30 p.m. June 24, after a family member found one of the victims inside the apartment.

The three-story brick apartment complex is located about a half mile from the popular strip of shops and restaurants in downtown Shirlington.

This incident marked the first homicide in Arlington County in two years, police said. The last recorded killing was a stabbing in March 2010.
