Houston, TX: Accused killer makes first court appearance

A man arrested in his girlfriend's murder made his first court appearance this morning.

Romelle Hawkins is charged with felony murder after prosecutors say he shot and killed his girlfriend on Synott near Beechnut yesterday morning, firing his gun three times from an SUV.

According to court documents the victim, 41-year-old Katherine Brownlow-Stewart, had been called to the scene by a friend who was arguing with her own boyfriend.

Investigators say Brownlow-Stewart was driven there by Hawkins and that when she intervened in the argument between the man and woman, Hawkins first fired at her two times, striking and killing her. He then fired a third time. That bullet hit and wounded Jerold Griffin, the boyfriend of the friend Brownlow-Stewart was trying to help.

Bond was set at $80,000. Hawkins is expected to appear before a judge tomorrow. He will have a court-appointed lawyer.
