The alleged suspect in the shooting death of a 51-year-old woman in St. Louis Park earlier this month reportedly called police afterward, then shot himself.
The man, who has been identified as the estranged husband of victim Stephanie Maxam, of St. Paul, was found by police around 10 p.m. on Oct. 3 at the intersection of East 37th Street and Hiawatha Avenue, dead of what they believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
About two hours earlier, the man allegedly shot Maxam in the Parkdale Plaza parking lot in St. Louis Park, which is in the 1600 block of Highway 100.
After the shooting, the man allegedly called police and told them to go to the intersection of East 37th Street and Hiawatha Avenue, according to a search warrant affidavit. He did not specify why police should go to the intersection.
In addition to finding the dead suspect at the intersection, police also found a storage shed that belonged to him. Officers searched the shed and found gun ammunition, as well as a letter addressed to the man's family. The contents of the letter have not been disclosed.
Records indicate that Stephanie Maxam filed for divorce from David Maxam, 55, in 2005. A relative told the News-Record newspaper in Harmony, Minn., that the shooting occurred a day before what would have been the couple's 25th wedding anniversary.
The newspaper also reports that Stephanie Maxam had graduated from Harmony High School, and was currently a senior vice president at U.S. Bank and the mother of four children—Davey, Kristin, Anna and Stephen.
A memorial fund has been set up in Stephanie Maxam's honor and an online remembrance guest book is open to friends and family.
