Greenfield, MA: Apparent murder-suicide by gunfire takes lives of Greenfield man and woman

GREENFIELD – Investigators are probing what appears to be a murder-suicide by gunfire that took the lives of a Devens Street couple Sunday night.

Renee L. Steese, first district attorney in the Northwestern District Attorney’s office said a 911 caller summoned police to 77 Devens St. shortly before 9:30 p.m.

The victims, Anthony L. Wallace, 46, and Karen E. Preston, 50, dead at the scene, were discovered in two separate areas upstairs, Reese said. Preston had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and Wallace suffered one, Steese said.

“At this point in appears to be a murder-suicide, “ Steese said, adding that several firearms were recovered from the home.

The couple, described as Steese as a boyfriend and girlfriend, lived at 77 Devens St. Investigators have learned that the couple had been arguing earlier in the evening, she said.

Wallace and Preston had been alone in the home when the shootings occurred, Steese said.

The state medical examiner’s office is slated to perform an autopsy on the victims. The investigation is being conducted by Greenfield police and state police.
