Dallas, TX: Gunman In Shootout Killed Himself

(KERA) - Dallas Police say a man who went on a shooting spree, wounding an officer Sunday night, did NOT die in a shootout with police. He killed himself. KERA's BJ Austin reports.

Dallas Police say at least eight rounds from a rifle hit Officer Richard Whitt's squad car as he responded to a call of gunfire at a Pleasant Grove apartment complex. Whitt was hit and seriously wounded.

A bystander was also struck. The gunman, 31 year old Kenneth Michael Horton fired at least 36 rounds at the complex on North Prairie Creek Road - where his estranged girlfriend lives. Officer Whitt's partner returned fire. Additional officers found the suspect on the apartment grounds, dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

The Medical Examiner ruled it self-inflicted. Investigators say Horton had a rifle, a pistol and multiple ammunition clips when they found him. Police Chief David Brown says he's proud of the quick response and actions of officers on the scene.
