A teenager found his parents dead Friday in what Richfield police are calling a murder-suicide.

Scott G. Rickenbach, 45, and Lori Rickenbach, 41, died early Friday, apparently of gunshot wounds, said Richfield Police Chief John Evans.

“They just were having some marital problems,” said Scott Rickenbach’s sister, Susan Barney. “We didn’t know to what extent.”

The Rickenbachs had four children, ages 10 to 17. It was the 17-year-old son who discovered his parents dead about 11:30 a.m. at home, Evans said.

There had not been any previous domestic violence calls at the home, 747 N. 400 East, Evans said.

The state medical examiner will determine the cause of death, a police news release states.

“There’s been a lot of concern in the community because they were well-known, well-liked people,” Evans said.

Barney declined to discuss what marital problems the couple had. Barney said her brother oversaw the family’s cattle operation in Sevier County. Lori Rickenbach worked at the Richfield office of the Utah State Tax Commission.

Barney said the family hasn’t determined what will happen to the children, but the 17-year-old son wants the children to stay together.

“So we’ll keep them together somehow,” Barney said.
