LULING, La. -- A Luling man was in critical condition Wednesday night after a six-hour standoff ended in gunfire.
Investigators said 52-year-old Gary Farrell barricaded himself inside his house after confessing that he killed his girlfriend.
It all started with a call to the St. Charles Sheriff's Office at about 2 p.m., deputies said. They said the caller told them that he had killed his girlfriend and left her body in the trunk of a car at St. Charles Parish Hospital.
It wasn't long before sheriff's deputies identified and tracked Farrell down at his home on Luling Avenue.
For the next six hours, Farrell was holed up inside his home, threatening suicide, deputies said.
"It really hits home, because you usually just read about these things," said neighbor Laura Martinko.
The neighborhood was cordoned off while authorities tried to talk Farrell out over the phone. After a while, the SWAT team moved in.
"Our SWAT team shot two canisters of tear gas in there," said Sheriff Greg Champagne. "They heard a 'pop' from inside. We were still on the phone with him. It looks like a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head."
At last check, Farrell was in critical condition at University Hospital.
Police said they have no motive yet in the case. They said they're not releasing the name of the victim until all family is notified.
