Albany, NY: Man kills self after stopping vehicle in Albany

ALBANY-- An armed man who was reported to be despondent by his girlfriend killed himself inside a sport utility vehicle this afternoon as officers followed him on a city street, police said.


The man, believed to be in his 20s, killed himself with a single shotgun blast.
The man's girlfriend called police shortly after noon to report he was depressed and driving around with a shotgun.

A patrol officer spotted the man's Nissan Pathfinder on Washington Avenue Extension.

Police said the officers followed behind the car as it headed east on Washington Avenue.

The man turned right onto Rosemont and then left on Hawkins Street where he killed himself, police said.

In addition to city police and state troopers, Mayor Jerry Jennings and Albany County District Attorney David Soares were at the scene.

Police closed portions of Rosemont and Hawkins to traffic.
