NH man gets 40 years to life for girlfriend death

Associated Press - April 17, 2009 6:55 PM ET

LACONIA, N.H. (AP) - A Belmont man convicted of murdering his girlfriend and her brother has been sentenced to 40 years to life for his girlfriend's death.

Kirkman Cassavaugh had already been sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder in the shooting and stabbing of Jeremy Huard. He was sentenced Friday in Laconia for second-degree murder in the shooting of Jennifer Huard.

WMUR says Cassavaugh showed no reaction and made no apologies as members of the Huard family remembered the victims of the September 2006 slayings and said their cruel fate was undeserved.

Cassavaugh was found guilty in February after a trial in which prosecutors said he had been fighting with his girlfriend, and her brother was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
